In a recent study, the lab of Prof. Katrin J. Svensson (Stanford University, USA) reports the protein Isthmin-1 (Ism1), an adipokine secreted by mature adipocytes, triggers a signaling cascade similar to that of insulin, sharing the glucoregulatory function, but unlike insulin, Ism1 counteracts lipid accumulation in the liver by switching hepatocytes from a lipogenic to a protein synthesis state.
