Essential alpha-amino acid in humans. Mixture of D-phenylalanine and L-phenylalanine. Precursor for tyrosine, the monoamine neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine (noradrenaline), epinephrine (adrenaline), the neuromodulator phenethylamine and the skin pigment melanin. Used in the manufacture of food and drink products and sold as a nutritional supplement for its reputed analgesic and antidepressant effects. Building block which may be used by as starting material for synthesis.
