Description

Ampicillin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic with activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Formulations containing ampicillin have been used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. This is a β-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis by inactivating transpeptidases on the inner surface of the bacterial cell membrane. Administration with β-lactamase cleaves the β-lactam ring of Ampicillin and inactivates it. Ampicillin is widely used in cell culture as a selective agent for transformed cells expressing β-lactamase. Can also be used as reference material.
