Coumarin-3-carboxylic acid can be used for quantitative, sensitive, specific detection of hydroxyl radicals (.OH) in aqueous solutions. Spectral Data: λex=395nm; λem=450nm. Fluorescence detection of 3-CCA hydroxylation allows real-time measurement of the kinetics of .OH generation (by γ-irradiation or chemically). Coumarin-3-carboxylic acid is also a building block and intermediate for the synthesis of coumarins which are well known natural products for their diverse biological activities.
