VPS4A is an ATPase associated with diverse cellular activities. It plays a key role in the endosomal sorting complex required for transport (ESCRT) pathway, which is crucial for endosomal trafficking, multivesicular body (MVB) formation, cCytokinesis (cell division) and viral budding (many enveloped viruses hijack VPS4A to exit cells). It helps disassemble ESCRT-III complexes in an ATP-dependent manner, recycling components for repeated use. VPS4A dysfunction can disrupt cell division and vesicle trafficking in addition, viruses such as HIV, Ebola, and others require VPS4A activity for efficient budding.
