Description
Beta-Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (β-hCG) is a glycoprotein hormone produced primarily by the placenta during pregnancy. It is a subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which plays a crucial role in maintaining pregnancy by supporting the corpus luteum to produce progesterone. hCG is composed of two subunits, the alpha subunit (shared with other hormones like LH, FSH, and TSH and the beta subunit, which is unique to hCG and responsible for its specific biological effects. hCG stimulates the corpus luteum to maintain progesterone production, supports fetal development and immune tolerance during pregnancy and is used as a marker in pregnancy tests and certain cancers.
