Description
SMRT is a corepressor protein that regulates gene transcription by repressing nuclear receptor activity. It recruits histone deacetylases (HDACs) to condense chromatin, making genes less accessible for transcription. SMRT interacts with ligand-dependent and ligand-independent transcription factors, including retinoic acid receptors (RARs), thyroid hormone receptors (TRs), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs), liver X receptor (LXR) or estrogen-related receptors (ERRs). SMRT plays a role in various biological processes, and its dysfunction is associated with cancer, metabolic disorders or neurological disorders.
