Description
Heterochromatin Protein 1 α is a chromatin-associated protein that plays a crucial role in maintaining heterochromatin structure, gene regulation, and genome stability. HP1α binds to methylated histone H3 (H3K9me3), a hallmark of heterochromatin, promoting gene silencing. HP1α participates in the DNA damage response by facilitating repair mechanisms at damaged sites. It is essential for proper chromosome condensation and segregation during cell division. HP1α interacts with DNA methyltransferases and histone modifiers to maintain epigenetic memory. HP1&akpha; levels are dysregulated in various cancers, affecting tumor growth and metastasis and abnormal HP1α function is linked to neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases.
