Description
Heterochromatin Protein 1 β is a chromatin-associated protein that plays a crucial role in maintaining heterochromatin organization, gene regulation, and genome stability. HP1β binds to trimethylated histone H3 lysine 9 (H3K9me3), a key marker of heterochromatin, helping to compact DNA and repress gene expression. HP1β plays a role in the DNA damage response, particularly in double-strand break repair. It ensures proper chromosome condensation and segregation during mitosis and meiosis. HP1β interacts with histone modifiers, DNA methyltransferases, and chromatin remodelers to maintain epigenetic stability. HP1β is implicated in tumor progression and chromatin instability in certain cancers and altered HP1β function is linked to neurological and cognitive disorders.
