Arbutin is a glycosylated hydroquinone used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that has been found in Arctostaphylos plants and has diverse biological activities, including tyrosinase inhibitory, antioxidant, anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory properties. Arbutin is a competitive inhibitor of tyrosinase in melanocytes (suppressing production of melanin) and therefore used as a skin-lightening agent and in the treatment of hyperpigmentation disorders.
