Pyridine-like alkaloid. Nicotine agonist. Potent agonist at α3β4 and α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and partial agonist at α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Shows analgesic, antihypertensive and inotropic activities. Used for smoking cessation. Iron-chelator and hydroxyl radical scavanger. Has antidepressant properties. Used in forensics in novel surface molecular imprinting techniques.
