Organic acid found in animal tissues. Major constituent of bile. Non-selective endogenous agonist at glycine receptors. Has many biological roles such as conjugation of bile acids, antioxidation, osmoregulation, membrane stabilization and modulation of calcium signaling, brain development and in the enhancement of bile flow and cholesterol clearance by the liver. It is essential for cardiovascular function, and development and function of skeletal muscle, the retina and the central nervous system. Antioxidant. Inhibitor of lipid peroxidation. Shows anti-inflammatory and anti-obesity activities. Used in cosmetics due to its antifibrotic properties and maintaining skin hydration.
