Description

LSD1+8a (Lysine-Specific Demethylase 1 isoform 8a) is an alternatively spliced variant of the LSD1 (KDM1A) gene that includes the neuron-specific exon 8a. This isoform is predominantly expressed in the brain and plays a key role in neuronal differentiation and function. While canonical LSD1 regulates gene expression by demethylating histone H3 on lysine 4 (H3K4me1/2), the +8a variant shows altered substrate specificity and interacts with different cofactors, contributing to neuron-specific transcriptional programs. Dysregulation of LSD1+8a has been implicated in neurodevelopmental disorders and certain cancers.
