Scientific Background Information

Product Description

eIF4A1 is an ATP-dependent RNA helicase of the DEAD-box protein family and an essential component of the eukaryotic translation initiation machinery. As part of the eIF4F complex, together with eIF4E and eIF4G, eIF4A1 facilitates ribosome recruitment and scanning on mRNA. eIF4A1 binds RNA and ATP and uses ATP hydrolysis to remodel and unwind RNA secondary structures, particularly within 5′ untranslated regions (5′ UTRs). This activity supports efficient translation initiation and is especially important for mRNAs with highly structured 5′ UTRs. eIF4A1 is also studied as a regulator of selective mRNA translation and has been linked to cellular proliferation, stress responses and cancer biology. Recombinant eIF4A1 is suitable for studies of RNA helicase and ATPase activity, translation initiation, protein-RNA interactions and screening of eIF4A1 modulators.
