Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) is a 30-amino acid Incretin peptide hormone produced in the intestine by differential processing of proglucagon. Incretin hormones are gut peptides that are secreted after nutrient intake and stimulate insulin secretion together with hyperglycemia. GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) are the known incretin hormones from the upper (GIP, K cells) and lower (GLP-1, L cells) gut. GLP-1 receptors are abundant in the hypothalamus which contains projections to the hunger centers. GLP-1 decreases calorie intake, boosts feelings of satiety and encourages weight loss. GLP-1 and GIP hormones are used as drugs for weight loss in obese patients and also to lower blood sugar levels.
